IRCH – AIIMS

On certain days six oncologists –specialized in different fields of cancer – sit together in the Board Room. Therefore six different OPDs run simultaneously in that room. At the time of registering for the OPD all patients are given common serial numbers and their respective medical files are also sent accordingly. A Ritinjali volunteer helps in separating the files according to the specialist the patient needs to consult. And also makes sure the patient reaches the right doctor. The common serial numbers create a lot of tension and confusion in the patients, and their caregivers, waiting outside. The volunteer manning the door has a tough time. Another volunteer is usually chasing missing file and helps patients collect their blood reports, CT scan reports etc. on time. All in all, by the time the OPD finishes Ritinjali's volunteers are quite exhausted – both mentally and physically. But it is also a rewarding experience. We come back feeling that yes, we do make a difference.
